BABY LEARNS THE SKILL OF WEIGHT BEARING
A baby has many movement explorations that precede crawling. Each skill is prepping baby’s body for this new action. In the above video, Rochel demonstrates one of these movements. She is exploring the movement of lifting her pelvis higher and higher into the air. Each time she is lifting her pelvis off of the floor, her arms support more of her weight. This is strengthening her arms to support her weight when she is on her hands and knees, the crawling position.
BABY LEARNS TO CRAWL THROUGH PLAY
A baby learns to crawl after developing the strength to support her pelvis in the air. Up to this moment, baby has spent her time on her back, on her belly, and sitting. Each of these positions keeps the pelvis on the floor. Notice in the above video that she is playing with the movement of lifting her pelvis–she does not know where it will take her. She is not lifting her pelvis with a goal in mind. She does not know what she is learning. She only knows that she is doing something new that is very interesting to her. This is how babies learn to crawl, through exploration and play!
