BABY CRAWLING: INTENTIONAL MOVEMENT

The development of a baby and his crawling skills evolve with an internal determination to go somewhere and to get something.  This inner feeling propels the baby into his movement from one location to another.  Remember, we defined this movement as locomotion?  The above video from youtube, found on Brandi384’s channel, shows a baby just shy of seven months learning to crawl.  He is motivated by his desire to get to the golf balls just a few feet away from him.  You can see his focus as he figures out how to locomote across the floor.  He demonstrates many of the micro-skills that precede crawling: weight bearing on the hands and knees, lifting the pelvis up to pull his knees under him, pushing off against the floor to move forward, balance on hands and knees, and contralateral (alternating) coordination of arms and legs.
